Athletics for Hope: Running Beyond Boundaries

Since 2018, Art for Hope has used the transformative power of running to heal, unite, and empower the refugee community in Dzaleka. What began as a small initiative for aspiring athletes has grown into a multilayered program serving everyone from professional hopefuls to first-time runners, from children to elders, from able-bodied participants to those with disabilities.

We believe that every step taken together is a step toward healing, inclusion, and hope.

Three Pillars of the Athletics Project

Weekly Running Club: The Dzaleka–Mbalame Village Run

Competitive Training & National Tournaments

Annual Dzaleka Community Races & Games

Every Saturday morning (5 am-8 am), we host an open running/walking club that welcomes all; no experience needed. The route stretches approximately 5 kilometers from Dzaleka Refugee Camp to Mbalame Village and back. This weekly gathering has become a cherished ritual:

For refugees, it is a chance to step outside the camp’s boundaries, breathe freely, and connect with the surrounding community.

For Malawian neighbors, it builds friendship and understanding, one run at a time.

For everyone, it is a reminder that movement heals and that we are stronger together.

The run is free, inclusive, and open to all ages and abilities.

For youth and young adults with dreams of becoming professional athletes, we provide structured coaching and access to national competitions. Through this program, refugee runners have represented Dzaleka at prestigious events across Malawi, including:

Kamuzu Barracks Competitions

Bingu Stadium, Lilongwe

Blantyre Athletic Events

Standard Bank BeMore Races

These opportunities do more than showcase talent, they break down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and open doors to scholarships, club trials, and future pathways.

Every summer, Dzaleka comes alive with our signature community events. These are not just races—they are celebrations of resilience, unity, and joy.

 Dzaleka 5K Run/Walk

Open to everyone in the camp, this event brings together both the host and refugees of all backgrounds to run or walk side by side. For many, it is the first time they have participated in an organized race. For all, it is a moment of pride and belonging.

Global Run for Freedom

Held in partnership with the global “Run for Freedom” movement, this annual event connects Dzaleka to a worldwide community advocating for an end to modern slavery and human trafficking. Our runners join thousands around the globe, raising awareness and showing that freedom is a universal dream.

 Community Games Day

The 5K Run/Walk is followed by a full day of games and activities, including:

  •  Arm Wrestling Competitions: A crowd favorite, drawing strong competitors and enthusiastic spectators.
  •  Disability-Inclusive Games: Specially designed activities ensuring that refugees with disabilities can fully participate and shine. These games celebrate ability, not limitation.
  •  Children’s Races: Young ones get their moment on the track, often running with pure joy and determination.
  •  Traditional Games: Cultural games that bring elders and youth together, preserving heritage while building community.

Refugee volunteers plan and lead these events, fostering leadership and ownership within the community.
